BY HOOK OR BY ROOK!
October in the NHL is a month that breeds hope to teams attempting to shed memories of past seasons gone awry. It also gives fans a chance to see and size up the freshmen class of potential future stars. …Here is a look at some of the great months of October in NHL by rookies.
MOST GOALS BY ROOKIE IN OCTOBER (Since 1998)
YEAR PLAYER G GP
1992-93 SELANNE Wpg 11 12
1988-89 SAKIC Que 10 12
2000-01 HUSELIUS Fla 9 13
1989-90 TURCOTTE Nyr 9 12
1991-92 AMONTE Nyr 8 14
1992-93 LINDROS Phi 8 13
2005-06 OVECHKIN Wsh 8 11
FULL FRONTAL NUG-ITY
After 4 goals in his first 5 games and six games remaining in the month, the “Nuge” might very well be the “Great White Buffalo” the Oilers need. RNH is currently on–pace to finish October with 9 goals. As you see with this list, does projecting his success dictate following the path behind two of the premiere goal scorers in the history of the game OR simply falling in line as a great month? We shall see…
MOST POINTS BY ROOKIE IN MONTH OF OCTOBER (SINCE 1988)
MOST POINTS BY ROOKIE IN MONTH OF OCTOBER (SINCE 1988)
YEAR PLAYER PTS GP
1989-90 MAKAROV Cgy 21 13
1992-93 SELANNE Wpg 20 12
1988-89 SAKIC Que 17 12
1992-93 JUNEAU Bos 17 10
2007-08 KANE Chi 16 12
The best part of this…not only was Sergei Makarov 31 when he played his first game, but he started his NHL career with 16 points over a 7-game point streak! I guess 317 goals & 697 points with the Russian National team prior to his arrival might have helped the adjustment period to the NHL.
Today current crop of first year phenoms will have a tough time catching these point totals, but here are a couple that might challenge a few marks should they continue this pace…
PROJECT MANAGERS
Adam Larsson is playing an average of 24:14 ICE-TIME/GM, the rookie record was set by Tobias Enstrom with 24:38 ICE-TIME/GM in 2007-08 with ATL….Gabriel Landeskog is averaging 3.8 shots/gm early this season, projecting that over the course of the season, his 314 shots would sit behind only Ovechkin, Selanne and Hawerchuk for most shots in a rookie season….Zac Rinaldo’s 28 PIM in first 5 games is a fine standard and assuming by some Norm Maracle he plays all 82 games, it would set the tone at a thunderous 459 PIM (2ND all-time in the NHL and 1ST all-time in the federal prison system).
I bid you a fond day from beautiful Baahston, where the wicked Chowds try to get it back on the rails Thursday night against the Leafs (7PM ON THE LEADER).
Till next week…same bat time…same bat channel
Scott
